Award Charts are your treasure map to good deals
Prices are listed in points, usually based on Distance Brackets (in miles)
ℹ️ Award charts are basically the price list for a frequent flyer program.
Prices are listed in points, usually based on Distance Brackets in miles.
ie. 2,001-4,000 miles = X points
Not all airlines publish these openly, some only publish for partner bookings, some have prices that can’t be “predicted” with a chart. But when Award charts are simple and distance-bracket based, there are great deals to be found.
🔎 A simple example:
The Qantas Award Chart is super easy to read and clearly shows you how many points you need for each class of travel and each distance. Now you can use Great Circle Map - Mapping Distances to map the distances on your possible routes.

Points required per bracket can increase quite drastically - so the best practice is to look for redemptions that get you as close to the maximum distance. For example:
1,201-2,400 miles = 43,600 points for business
2,401-3,600 miles = 68,400 points for business
So if your route is 2,350 miles you’re getting amazing value on the bracket, but if you’re flying 2,500 miles you’re getting bad value.
